Who is eligible?
Free help preparing your taxes is available for low-income, middle-income and senior taxpayers. The IRS and AARP sponsor free tax assistance for eligible Virginians. All volunteers are trained in both federal and state taxes.
- The IRS sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs at many locations for taxpayers who qualify. The VITA program offers free tax help to people who make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and taxpayers who speak limited English. - The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program provides free tax assistance to taxpayers with low to moderate incomes, with priority to seniors age 60 and older. To learn more about this program and eligibility, visit AARP.
- Many local Commissioner of the Revenue or Director of Finance offices in Virginia also offer tax assistance to their citizens.
