Across the country, thousands of people have lost their personal information and their money to tax-related scams. Scammers use the phone, social media, email, and snail mail to pose as employees of Virginia Tax or the IRS. They may claim that you have violated a tax law, cheated on tax credits, owe money to the state or federal government, or that you need to verify information for a Tax Relief Refund.
We will never ask for personal information through email, text messages, or other methods that aren't secure. We also do not ask customers to resolve outstanding tax liabilities by submitting prepaid cards.
